A datacenter can be a boon or a bane. Not every business needs one. In fact, I’d caution some businesses against it altogether. And it’s not necessarily based on size of the business.
First off, it is expensive to run a datacenter. You have to have facilities big enough to hold all of your hardware and you have to have the personnel to manage it. You have to make sure that your facilities are clean and cool. To properly maintain a datacenter is itself a huge undertaking and a major challenge, not to mention a huge expense.
Of course, a datacenter is not always thousands of servers in a big warehouse either. It could just be 20 medium-size servers in a room in your business center. But that doesn’t mean you can’t use that room for something else either.
Sometimes, it is less expensive and less of a headache to rent your hardware from a service provider. Whether you lease an entire datacenter or simply co-host your hardware at someone else’s facilities, outsourcing your datacenter is always a viable option and one you should give an honest consideration to, no matter what size your business.
There are reasons to have your own datacenter. There are reasons not to as well. Weigh your options and do what is best for your company.
